Sea Salt Scrub Recipe
With wide eyes and awe on our faces, we looked to each other and instantly knew what the other was experiencing… “my skin has never felt so good!”
On a recent trip to a friend’s wedding in balmy Charleston, South Carolina, we explored the town by foot. In our exploration we came across a store selling sea salt scrubs with samples abound, and we instantly fell under the spell of the scrubs. We tried numerous, and our hands, which were now soft as the finest silks, smiled back at us. We continued to wander around looking at the various scrubs, smelling and testing ones infused with essential oils. When we finally exited the store, it was pretty much all we could talk about. We continued our walk into downtown, but our hands were just as active as our legs as we constantly rubbed palms together, as if devising a master plan. We enjoyed the scrubs so much so that we decided to return to the store multiple times on our trip, simply to continue using the lovely samples, and we left with a bunch to bring home. In turn, we decided to make our own scrubs and offer them as add-ons. I can assure you that your feet would be delighted to receive this treatment.
Well, after someone asked if there was any sea salt scrub for purchase at Homebody, we decided to share the recipe to this well-kept secret for the skin. Surprisingly simple, this recipe is what we use and can be altered for preferred carrier oils + infused with your favorite essential oil. Check out the ingredients and steps below.
Ingredients:
¼ cup of carrier oil: oils such as jojoba, olive, avocado, and grapeseed work well. We prefer jojoba oil as we already have it around the office.
1 cup of sea salt: various types of salts can be used such as dead sea salt, himalayan sea salt, black sea salt or epsom salt. Please note, your typical iodized table salt contains little therapeutic value, so it’s worth investing in one of the salts listed above.
10 or so drops of your favorite essential oil: we use eucalyptus, but we also have a plain version without any essential oil. It’s up to you if you’d like to infuse your scrub or not!
Directions:
Stir carrier oil and sea salt in a large bowl until well combined
Add in any essential oils you’d like (10 drops or so)
Store in a glass jar at room temp or slightly below
Benefits
This is one of those treatments where you instantly feel the change once you’ve removed the salt with a rinse or a towel. Your skin feels silky smooth at once. Sea salt scrubs are excellent exfoliators, removing dry skin and revealing the softness below. Moreover, the salt contains vitamins and minerals not found in sugar scrubs, and these contents are naturally anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory. Which is to say, sea salt scrubs are fantastic detoxifiers! Plus, the vitamins and minerals work in tandem with our lymphatic system as we actively scrub, creating a powerful synergy of detoxification. While I haven’t dabbled with sugar scrubs, I do know that the salt scrub is more abrasive, so if you have sensitive skin it’s worth going forth gently (we don’t advise using the scrub on the face). That said, salt does provide significantly more therapeutic benefit than sugar, so we go with salt. It’s worth having a little moisturizer around to apply afterwards, such as coconut oil or shea butter.
That’s it! It really is that simple to enjoy this powerfully soothing treatment. Matter of fact, my hands are now feeling dry so I’m going to do a quick scrub. I hope you do too!
